Resonant modes in triangular dielectric cavities

The resonant optical modes of a high permittivity dielectric prism with an equilateral triangular cross section are discussed. Eigenmode solutions of the scalar Helmholtz equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions, appropriate to a conducting boundary, are applied for this purpose. The particular plane wave components present in these modes are analyzed for their total internal reflection beha...

Lasing modes in equilateral-triangular laser cavities

We report the study of lasing modes in broad-area, equilateral-triangular laser cavities. An alternative approach is proposed to study optical modes in equilateral triangular cavities in an analytical form. The modes were obtained by examining the simplest optical paths inside the cavity, which yields the final solution with the boundary conditions. The cavities can be fabricated from semicondu...

Directional emission from asymmetric resonant cavities.

Asymmetric resonant cavities with highly noncircular but convex cross sections are predicted theoretically to have high-Q whispering gallery modes with highly anisotropic emission. We develop a ray dynamics model for the emission pattern and present numerical and experimental confirmation of the theory.

Equilateral-triangular shape in 14C.

An equilateral-triangular shape of three alpha clusters surrounded by excess neutrons is suggested for 14C, based on the molecular-orbit model. It is found that the attractive interaction between an excess neutron and an alpha particle stabilizes the K(pi)=0(+) and 3(-) rotational bands, which demonstrates an equilateral-triangular symmetry. This K(pi)=3(-) band at 3 MeV below the 10Be+alpha th...

Dielectric based resonant guided wave networks.

Resonant guided wave networks (RGWNs) are demonstrated to operate based on dielectric waveguides, broadening the scope of this optical design approach beyond plasmonics. The intersection of two dielectric waveguides that is modified by a tuned scattering particle is shown to function as an equal power splitting element, a key enabler of resonant guided wave networks. We describe structures comp...
